Position Summary:
This position is accountable for processing radiology images for interpretation and review with digital and hard copy reading flow to ensure prompt results turnaround time. This position is responsible for having a working knowledge of the PACS system and the ability to assist physician/customers in locating specific images. Assists in training of new staff, including Radiologists and medical staff, on basic PACS skills, current releases, system and operational changes. Digitizes film based images for archiving in PACS for soft-copy interpretation and storage. Identifies appropriate anatomy and modality and prepares relevant comparison images for radiologist review. Manages critical back-up network for Surgery cases. Is the primary resource for film printing questions as to anatomy, cut, image, film size, etc. This position reports to the Administrative Manager and works closely with technologists in Medical Imaging as well as the radiologists and medical staff. The incumbent prioritizes images to be read, receives stat call reports and reports interpretation of call reports back to physicians or nursing units. This position requires on-call for 3rd shift. The Image Prep Tech is the only person in the Image Service Center on this shift and is responsible for any and all job functions during that time as well as maintaining control of image flow to the radiologist.
Education: High School diploma required. Some college preferred especially computer-related courses.
Experience: Preferred three-five years of office or computer software experience. Successfully completed a Medical Terminology course or sign a memorandum of understanding that a Medical Terminology course be completed upon 6 months of hire.
Skills:
Knowledge of anatomy necessary for identifying appropriate relevant prior images for comparison.
Demonstrated ability to work independently requiring little supervision.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and listening skills required.
Demonstrated customer service skills when responding to requests from radiologists and physician customers via telephone, facsimile, or e-mail.
Must demonstrate the ability to operate in a high stress environment and manage multiple tasks while staying focused on overall delivery of images and results reporting to customers.
Must exhibit strong oral skills and able to interact with physicians and employees from all levels of the organization.
Has the ability to utilize complex integrated Radiology Information and PACS systems for processing information and for archiving and retrieving images and reports as well as train new staff members in their use and application in the administrative environment.
Upon request, prints or burns images to CD for distribution to physician offices’ hospital departments, Surgery, and other institutions.
Utilizes complex image back-up procedure daily to ensure image availability to Surgery in the event of an unexpected PACS downtime.
