Position Title:            Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Pain Management
Department:              Clinical Neuroscience Institute (CNSI)
Reports To:                Collaborating Physician(s) and APP Manager

Locations:                  Miami Valley Hospital / Miami Valley South


Summary

The Premier Physician Network offers a variety of Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant positions with varying degrees of responsibility. Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), in conjunction with the center’s physicians and clinical staff, are responsible for exemplary patient care and continuity of medical services under the direction of supervising physician(s). Responsibilities vary by specialty and position, and APPs must be accessible to their physicians, staff, and supervisors.


Nature and Scope

  • Knowledge of professional medical practice to provide and evaluate patient care.
  • Skilled in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of medicine to provide ongoing patient care.
  • Competent in taking medical history, assessing medical condition, and interpreting findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality assurance and quality control standards.
  • Capable of reacting calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Excellent communication skills with both patients and colleagues are essential.

Position Summary

The Pain Management Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides comprehensive care to patients with acute and chronic pain conditions. In collaboration with physicians and the inter-disciplinary team, the APP is responsible for patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management of pain. The APP supports patients and families through education, evidence-based care, and coordination of services, while promoting safe, effective, and compassionate care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive pain management care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Conduct inpatient consults as well as having a participation in the outpatient clinic
  • Perform clinical decision-making, care plan development, and prescribing practices within licensure and scope of practice.
  • Apply professional standards of care, ethics, and regulatory compliance in all practice settings.
  • Participate in the Opioid Stewardship Committee, Sickle Cell Committee, and Pain Device Committee.
  • Collaborate with physicians and the healthcare team through the Standard Care Agreement to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Support organizational goals by developing and implementing system-level modifications that improve patient care delivery.
  • Be trained and perform various procedures such as pain blocks, nerve blocks, pain pump management.

Population Served

Defined by the APP’s scope of licensure and certification. The APRN/PA provides pain management services across diverse patient populations, ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate care.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree from an accredited NP/PA program required

Licensure / Certification / Registration

  • Valid license to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant in the State of Ohio
  • Current AHA BLS certification required at the time of hire
  • National Certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) or Physician Assistant
  • Certificate to Prescribe must be current and maintained at all times
  • PHP Standard Care Arrangement (SCA) required prior to engaging in practice

Experience

  • APRN/PA experience preferred

Knowledge / Skills

  • Thorough understanding of HIPAA law and demonstration of professional discretion
  • Two references from APRNs in the clinical or educational setting (if applicable)
  • Reference from collaborating physician if previously in this role
  • Must be able to multitask with constant interruptions while maintaining a pleasant demeanor
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Effective interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with both patients and colleagues
  • Basic computer literacy including Excel, Word, Outlook; EMR experience required (Epic preferred)
