Patient Care Tech (PCT) / Cardiac Catheterization Lab
Position: Patient Care Tech
Department: Cardiac Catherization Lab
Shift: 8:30 am-5:30 pm Full Time Four Nine-Hour days, 72 hours per pay period
Facility: Miami Valley Hospital
They collaborate with nurses and doctors to provide personalized care for patients. They can:
- Check vital signs, including temperature, heart rate, and breathing rate.
Assist patients by transporting them to the procedure area and from the procedure area
- Report any changes in a patient's condition to a nurse.
- Assist with Codes,
- Must be comfortable doing EKGs
- Help with Patientflow in the department
The PCT works under the supervision of a nurse, who ensures they are performing tasks safely and correctly. Sometimes, the PCT may also be referred to as a Patient Care Technician/Unit Clerk (PCT/HUC). Like HUC, they assist with the paperwork and other tasks that keep the hospital running smoothly, which also helps patients receive the best care possible.
So, even though PCTs don't wear capes, they are essential members of the healthcare team who help patients feel better and recover their health.
Education: You'll need a high school diploma or GED.
Training: Before you begin, you'll need to obtain a BLS CPR certification. They can teach you how to perform CPR during your orientation, so you don't need to learn it beforehand.
Successful completion of one of the following:
- Completion of previous STNA or CNA training or Patient Care Technician/Assistant training.
- Direct patient care experience within the last five years: Performing fundamental skills of vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) & direct patient care activities ie. Bathing, turning/positioning, toileting
- Currently enrolled in nursing school and have completed at least one clinical rotation.
Other Skills:
- You can handle doing many things simultaneously, even when people interrupt you, and still be nice.
- You know how to use a computer.
- You're good at organizing things.
- You can talk and listen well to others.
- Bonus points: You've worked in a hospital before
