PERFUSIONIST
Job Summary
Provides patient care in support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of circulatory system. Such care may include, but is not limited to performance of the duties and responsibilities listed below. Evaluates techniques and/or equipment for clinical application. Acts as a resource person for hospital staff, corporation employees, and students.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Cardiopulmonary Bypass
2. Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping
3. Lab Analysis Equipment
4. Electronic Physiological Monitoring
5. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
6. Autologous Blood Processing
7. Therapeutic Apheresis
8. Ventricular Assist Device
9. Respiratory Assist
10. Isolated limb perfusion
11. Hyperthermic perfusion of the Abdomen
12. Platelet Rich Plasma Sequestration
13. Administration of anesthetic agents under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist.
14. Administration of pharmacological agents required during bypass as directed and approved by physician.
15. Works under the direct supervision of a physician.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
1. Training and knowledge in perfusion technology
2. Training, knowledge and/or ability to learn above clinical duties.
3. Good verbal and written communication skills.
4. Ability to operate or ability to learn to operate equipment and related supplies used in performing the above job responsibilities.
5. Should have basic computer skills.
Qualifications :
Education and ExperienceMust hold at least a Bachelor (Masters is preferred) degree from an accredited perfusion school and must be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (CCP). Must be able to meet hospital standards to obtain privileges.
Licensing, Certification or Other
Certified Clinical Perfusionists (CCP) must have received certification as a clinical perfusionist by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and proof of immunizations or other health testing where required. Must have a valid driving license and reliable means of transportation.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to clearly speak, write and understand English required.
Reasoning
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized or emergency situations.
Physical Demands
Required to stand, walk, sit: use hands to grasp, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls: reach with hands and arms: stoop, kneel, crouch, talk and hear. Must be able to lift and/or move equipment as required. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
Employees work in hospitals. The noise level encountered may vary from quiet to loud. Temperature levels in operating rooms vary greatly from one location to another, but generally are cold. Employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and hazardous chemicals.
Interpersonal Interaction
Internal
Works with other clinical staff and departments in performing above duties and responsibilities. Maintains regular communication with direct supervisor and others as directed in performing job duties, responsibilities and requirements.
External
Must be able to communicate and work effectively with hospital staff members and physicians.
Special Working Conditions/Requirements
1. Ability to work a minimum of eight hours per day and longer according to case/staffing requirements.
2. Ability to work when needed and be available to work variable hours and shifts (day, afternoon, evening, weekends, holidays).
3. Ability to take call as assigned, and respond to pages in a timely manner.
4. Ability to work in stressful, fast-paced operating room work environment.
5. Reliable, readily available transportation to get to work assignments.
6. Ability and willingness to complete continuing education as needed to comply with regulatory standards.
