Position Summary 

 

General Summary/Responsibilities: 

A Polysomnographic Technician performs comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education under the general supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or the Board-Certified Sleep Physician.

Education 

 

Minimum Level of Education Required: High School completion / GED 

 

Additional requirements: 

  • Type of degree: N/A

  • Preferred educational qualifications: Basic Medical Terminology, moderate computer skills  

  • Position specific testing requirement: Must be enrolled in and have completed the A-STEP Online Self Study Modules within two years of enrollment.  Or Must be enrolled in or have completed training in polysomnography in a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) program with the polysomnography option.  The Registry exam must be passed within one year of completion of the A-Step program.   Must also participate in at least 30 credits (averaged 10 per year over the past 36 months) of sleep related continuing education credits.       

 

Licensure/Certification/Registration

Minimum Level of Experience Required: 1 - 3  years of job-related experience 

Prior job title or occupational experience: N/A 

Prior specific functional responsibilities: Successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility, or a minimum 1 year as a Polysomnographic Trainee with documented proficiency in all required competencies, or an allied health professional such as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Respiratory Therapist.

Essential Duties & Functions 

 

Essential Duties & Functions: 

 

 

  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient specific needs (physical/ mental limitations, current emotional/ physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/ social history). 

  • Determine final testing parameters/ procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols. 

  • Review patient history and verify medical order.  

  • Follow sleep center protocols related to sleep study. 

  • Verify patient identification, collect documents and obtain consent for the study. 

  • Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.  

  • Select appropriate testing equipment. Calibrate the testing equipment to determine proper function. 

  • Applying electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards by the AASM. 

  • Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization.  

 

Other Duties & Functions: 

   

  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards, regarding safety and infection control issues. 

  • Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.  

  • Maintain current CPR or BLS certification. 

  • Maintain 10 CEUs annually.  

  • Demonstrate computer skills appropriate for the position. 

  • Follow HIPPA and privacy policies. 

  • Respond to sleep patient’s procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate education utilizing sleep center specific protocols.  

  • Participate in the quality assurance program.  

  • Comply with professional standards of conduct.  

  • Able to work 12 hour shifts 3-4 nights a week ranging from 6:30pm-6:30am.  

  • Able to work at either location, Centerville or Huber Heights as needed.
