Position Summary

General Summary/Responsibilities:
A registered nurse / polysomnographic technologist role is to provide a wide range of neurologic studies to allow physicians to diagnose and treat a variety of neurologic and sleep related conditions, and to support the physician through thorough assessment and care planning for the sleep disordered patient. The RN works under the general supervision of the medical director, and direct supervision of the clinical lab manager, and sleep center director to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. If not registered as a polysomnographic technologist, the RN may act as a trainee in this level for 12-months and is required to continue their education by asking questions, doing independent study for sleep medicine and starting the A-STEP modules.

The registered nurse (RN) partners with and advocates for patients/families/significant others to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support which impacts patient outcomes in a safe environment. The RN functions in a versatile role that demonstrates professionalism and promotes excellence and autonomy in the practice of Nursing. The RN utilizes the nursing process in conjunction with evidence-based principles to care for a diverse caseload of patients within the department scope of service. The RN serves as guide, healer, collaborator, teacher, leader and sentry. The RN collaborates with and guides care delivered by the inter-professional team. The RN is accountable for compliance with the Ohio Nurse Practice Act, Nursing Code of Ethics and applicable regulatory standards.

    ** Valid Registration by the BRPT (Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologists) or Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS)
    RN must complete A-step program for polysomnography within 12 months of hire if hired as a trainee in lieu of this requirement and receive their registration as a polysomnographic technician within 18 months of hire. RN will be required to maintain current RN licensure in this job code.
    Current CPR certification required at the time of hire.

1.    Nursing practice, which is grounded in the organization’s nursing philosophy, involves the patient/caregivers/significant others with respect to their values, cultural differences, preferences and expressed needs. 
2.    Assessing health status for the purpose of providing nursing care.
3.    Identifying patterns of human responses to actual or potential health problems amenable to a nursing regimen.
4.    Plan, implement and document nursing interventions based on clinical assessment and best practice in a timely manner. Administers medications, treatments, and regimens within scope of practice that is prescribed by appropriately authorized individuals.
5.    Evaluate patient response/outcome to determine effectiveness of treatments and modify as necessary to achieve identified patient goals. 
6.    Providing health counseling and health teaching.
7.    Awareness and accountability with regards to outcomes across the balanced score card.
8.    Coordinates, collaborates, and appropriately delegates with the interdisciplinary team-including physicians-to optimize patient outcomes. 
9.    Initiates appropriate actions, including use of chain of command, to address unmet needs or changes in patient conditions.
10.    Application of critical thinking along the novice to expert continuum.
